It’s 4 hours from Hanoi to
Halong Bay by bus. This gives us an
opportunity to see the countryside firsthand.
There are the older buildings but many signs of new construction. The garment industry, all that “Made in
Vietnam” clothing, has many large manufacturing campuses, employing low wage
workers. But we learn that there are
other low wage countries that may divert the employment, namely Myanmar and
some African counties.
We saw 2 large coal
generating power plants spewing out the CO2 but are told that there are hydro dams
in the north.
On the way, I provide an up
to date score on the 7th game of the World Series and when it’s
official that the Cubs have won for the first time in 108 years, a cheer
erupts. My iPhone was down to 4% so if
that game went another inning, we wouldn’t have known anything for 2 days as
Internet was unavailable in Halong Bay.
